Apparently I pronounce the names of three main-ish characters wrong.

quin13:

Bartimaeus which my accent fucks up.

Faquarl. Which I knew was wrong and thought I’d rectified recently.

And Asmira. That one was a very Wtf moment.

Bartimaeus I say as bar-UH-may-us. My accent takes the tee sound out of everything. I do know how its mean’t to sound.

Faquarl was FHAR-kwul until I actually looked at the r and realised it was mean’t to be fhar-kwarl with no stress. It’s actually mean’t to be fuh-KWARL apparently. Which is funny cause it sounds like fuck all.

And Asmira I thought was az-MEER-ah. Apparently it’s az-muh-RAH. What!?

(Jonathan Stroud also pronounces Ptolemy as toll-me as well which is weird. Its definitely historically said as toll-em-ee.)

Ignoring bart, i can’t be the only one who pronounces these names like this. Asmira for definite. Does anyone else ???

well, considering that I read the books in German, I pronounce most of the names differently because they changed them for the translation

Bartimaeus = Bartimäus (sounds almost the same though)

Nathaniel= Nathanael (nuh-TA-nuh-ale)

Ptolemy= Ptolemäus

Solomon= Salomo

#bartimaeus

    I definitely thought it was “FHAR-kwall”. I always wind up putting letters where they shouldn’t be or mixing them up...

    God, I said Faquarl exactly the same way as you did. (I think I finally figured out how to pronounce it correctly, but...

  4. beclectica said: i was definitely one of the people pronouncing Asmira the wrong way, and as for Faquarl i tend to trip over the f’s and the q’s so it just ends up as Fraqarlakglla

  6. matushka-rossiya said: I pronounce the names in the German way…ähm Bartimaeus with an ‘ä’ ‘Barti(i is like a ‘ee’)-mä(similar like ‘ae’)us’ and Faquarl like ‘Fa-Karl’ and Asmira like ‘As-mira’
  7. stolidity said: until I was like 13 I pronounced bartimaeus without the ae because it confused me. I definitely pronounce asmira wrong and I’ve heard ptolemy pronounced differently by various scholars so who the fuck knows.
